Tests on RI Mystery Drug Due Back this Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island's Health Department says it should know this week what caused the death of 10 people who apparently injected some type of intravenous drug in March and April.

Heath Director Michael Fine has said he believes the victims, who ranged in age between 23 and 57, used some sort of synthetic opioid. Most were residents of northern Rhode Island. Some died in hospitals and others were found dead in their homes.

Fine tells the Providence Journal that tests are expected back this week to determine the makeup of the drug.

He says the Health Department will then assist law enforcement officials in determining where the drug came from.

Fine says between 100 and 200 Rhode Island residents die each year from drug overdoses.
