2 Win $300,000 Rhode Island Innovation Fellowships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A project that aims to make Rhode Island the first state to eradicate Hepatitis C, and another to teach young people how to think like designers have each won a contest for a fellowship worth $300,000.

The Rhode Island Foundation on Tuesday announced Lynn Taylor, a doctor at Miriam Hospital, and Adrienne Gagnon, a designer, had won the 2013 Rhode Island Innovation Fellowship. The fellowship is in its second year. It's funded by philanthropists John and Letitia Carter.

Taylor and Gagnon were among 180 entrants.

Gagnon's project is aimed at training a new generation of designers with tools such as mobile design labs and an online, interactive design curriculum portal.

Taylor's project would respond to Hepatitis C with a plan that includes building awareness, rapid testing and access to care.
