404 homeless, at-risk veterans helped at RI event

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island group that aims to connect homeless veterans with community services says it served more than 400 veterans at a recent military-style encampment.

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island says 404 veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming so participated in the event at Diamond Hill State Park in Cumberland last Friday through Sunday.

That's the largest turnout in the 20 years Operation Stand Down has hosted the event.

The encampment included representatives from social service agencies that meet various needs, including by providing food, clothing, health care and help finding housing.

Veterans were offered optometry services and lawyers were available to offer legal advice. District Court and Traffic Tribunal proceedings were held at the park Saturday.
