CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Block says if he would reduce wait times at the Division of Motor Vehicles to 30 minutes or less in his first six months in office.
Block spoke outside the DMV's main office in Cranston Tuesday.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee made improving the DMV a top priority in 2011. At the time, the wait for a new license was more than four hours. Wait times averaged a little over an hour as of last month.
A years-long project to update the computer system still is not complete.
Block says he'll examine the $15 million project to decide if it's viable, and try to get money back from the company working on it.
He says if the DMV can't get wait times down, he'll outsource some of the work to AAA or other groups.
