Bryant freshman killed in on-campus crash

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — A Bryant University freshman has died after the vehicle he was in struck a tree on the Smithfield campus.

Police say it happened around 1 a.m. Thursday. He was taken by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital but died of his injuries.

Four other freshmen in the car were taken to Rhode Island Hospital. They were treated and released.

Bryant University President Ronald Machtley (MAKE'-lee) identified the student who was killed as Christiano Barbosa. In an email to students and staff he said "our hearts go out to Christiano's family and friends, and to the other students involved in the accident."

The statement didn't say who was driving.

Police say the crash is being investigated.
