PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee has announced more than $200,000 in grants to support libraries throughout Rhode Island.

The governor announced the recipients on Thursday along with the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services. Nine libraries and library consortia got awards, which are funded with federal dollars.

The Providence Public Library is building a digital literacy curriculum to help adults with limited English-speaking skills learn computer skills. The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport is improving access to its collections of printed materials on colonial furniture, art and architecture by adding electronic records to its online catalog.

A middle school library in East Greenwich is having students create video book trailers that connect fiction and non-fiction books.

Chafee said libraries play a vital role in neighborhoods throughout the state.
