PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's governor has ordered the state's bridge authority to shut down the toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge after signing into law a budget that eliminates it.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee said Thursday he has directed the executive director of the Turnpike and Bridge Authority and his staff to shut down the toll. It had been opposed by many residents and lawmakers on Aquidneck Island and in the East Bay.

The authority spent up to $5 million installing collection equipment on the bridge for the 10-cent toll. The toll is expected to be shut down by noon Friday.

The new budget establishes a 1-cent gas tax effective July 1, 2015, to help fund bridge and other infrastructure projects. RITBA will also receive additional revenue from the state's existing gasoline tax.
