NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — An executive at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut has been selected by the Lifespan health system to be new president of Newport Hospital in Rhode Island.

The Newport Daily News reports Crista Durand becomes the 20th president in the hospital's history and the first woman to hold that position.

She replaces August Cordeiro, who served as president for four years before taking medical leave in November. Arthur Sampson, who is the president of The Miriam Hospital in Providence, has been serving as Newport Hospital's interim president.

Durand, a graduate of Salve Regina University in Newport, is currently vice president of strategic planning, marketing and business development at the 280-bed Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.
