Cranston officer returns after 2-year suspension

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Cranston police captain accused of doctoring statistics about misconduct complaints against officers has returned to duty after nearly two years on suspension.

The Providence Journal reports that Capt. Todd Patalano remains charged with misconduct by the Police Department.

City payroll records show that during his suspension, Patalano was paid $98,626 in 2012 and $99,368 last year.

Council President John E. Lanni Jr. says he's asking the Fung administration for an accounting of the cost to pursue charges against Patalano. A spokesman for the mayor says officials will not discuss personnel matters.

His lawyer, Joseph F. Penza Jr., said Patalano has been eager to return to work for the last two years.

An audit in 2011 allegedly showed some complaints were put aside improperly without investigation and not publicly acknowledged.
