Drunken partiers keep Narragansett police busy

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) — Narragansett police say they've made dozens of alcohol-related arrests in efforts to curb the problem of loud college parties that have bothered local residents for years.

Police Lt. Anthony Pelopida told WJAR-TV that Narragansett officers made 136 arrests related to alcohol during late-night shifts from Sept. 1 to Sept. 13. He says the most common charges are underage drinking, littering, public urination and noise violations.

Pelopida says the police department has been sending out extra patrols on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights that are specifically targeting underage drinking and loud parties. A lot of college students, including many from the University of Rhode Island, live in Narragansett.

Officers also have been placing orange stickers on noisy or troublesome houses in efforts to reduce the problems.
