PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Another mosquito sample in Rhode Island has tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis.
State health and environmental officials announced Tuesday that the sample came from a mosquito trap set in Exeter on Sept. 9. It's the fourth time this year the virus has been found in mosquitoes in the state.
The latest sample that tested positive came from a species of mosquito that feeds exclusively on birds.
No human cases of either EEE or West Nile virus have been reported in Rhode Island so far this year. The state says it's not unexpected to find the viruses this time of year.
Residents are urged to use insect repellant and to cover up at dawn and dusk to protect against mosquito-borne illness.
