Exeter man dies week after crash on Pell Bridge

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ An Exeter man has died a week after his pickup truck crossed the center line on the Pell Bridge and caused a head-on crash.

A spokeswoman for Rhode Island Hospital says 75-year-old Elijah Swift died on Tuesday.

Police say he was at the wheel around 3 p.m. Dec. 24 and traveling east when he hit a car being driven west by 25-year-old William Oberg of Warwick.

Hospital spokeswoman Ellen Slingsby says Oberg was listed in good condition there on Thursday.

State Police Lt. Paul Olszewski (ol-SHEF'-skee) says it's unclear why Swift crossed the center line, and an investigation continues. He says there's no indication that alcohol or cellphone use was a factor in the crash.
