Governor Chafee to Highlight New Paid Family Leave Law

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island's governor is celebrating a new law that allows workers to take paid time off to care for a new child or sick loved one.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee is scheduled to join with supporters of the new law Tuesday afternoon at the Statehouse for a ceremonial bill signing.

The new law allows workers to take up to four weeks off in a year to care for a new child or sick relative. Those on leave would continue to make about two-thirds of their normal pay, though compensation is capped for anyone making more than $61,400.

The program will be funded by a payroll deduction. Public-sector workers are not eligible.

Advocates for women, children and the elderly pushed for the new law.

California and New Jersey have similar laws.
