PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The superintendent of Rhode Island State Police will accompany Providence elementary students on their walk to school as part of the "Walking School Bus" program.

Col. Steven O'Donnell is scheduled to walk students to Mary E. Fogarty Elementary School in South Providence on Tuesday morning.

The Providence Children's Initiative introduced the walking school bus to help promote on-time attendance for children who live within walking distance of school. It is a program of the nonprofit agency Family Service of RI.

O'Donnell hopes his participation will raise awareness about the need for adult volunteers.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, who attended the Mary Fogarty school, walked children home from there as part of the program last month.
