PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) has nominated the former chief executive of The Miriam Hospital to be Rhode Island's next health insurance commissioner.
The governor announced his choice of Kathleen Hittner on Thursday. She would replace Christopher Koller, who is leaving eight years to become president of a New York health policy foundation called the Milbank Memorial Fund.
Hittner has been a faculty member at Brown University's medical school since 1979. She served as chief of anesthesiology at both Roger Williams Medical Center and Miriam. She was president of Miriam's medical staff from 1998 to 2000 and president and CEO there from 2000 to 2009.
The governor said Hittner is widely respected and has decades of experience. He also said Koller's departure leaves "big shoes to fill.''
