Landfill Owners Agree to Pay $3 Million Over Odor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The mayor of Johnston and operators of the state's Central Landfill have announced a tentative settlement of the lawsuit filed over odors that wafted from the facility.

Mayor Joseph Polisena says Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation has agreed to pay the town $3 million to compensate for residents' suffering.

Polisena held a news conference Thursday evening and said money from the settlement would be used to build a new synthetic-turf athletic field.

Michael O'Connell, executive director of Rhode Island Resource Recovery, says he's glad the money will be used to improve the lives of the town's young people.

Polisena tells the Providence Journal the town will continue to pursue damages for any odors traced to BroadRock Gas Services, an energy company which uses gas generated from the landfill.
