Mosquitoes in RI Test Negative for West Nile

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The latest batch of mosquitoes tested in Rhode Island is free of West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis.

The state Department of Environmental Management said Monday all 125 mosquito samples collected from 21 traps set statewide during the week of June 17 tested negative for both diseases.

The department also said the remaining 32 pools collected during the week of June 10 also tested negative. The results had been pending.

Mosquitoes are trapped every week statewide from summer into fall. They are tested at the state Department of Health laboratory.

No mosquitoes in the state have tested positive for West Nile or eastern equine encephalitis this year. Last year, six pools of mosquitoes tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis and five tested positive for West Nile.
