Pawtucket Man Sentenced to 50 Years in Rape Case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A 54-year-old Pawtucket man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for raping the child of a former girlfriend in the 1980s and 1990s.

Prosecutors say John Rainey began sexually assaulting the girl when she was 8-years-old.

The victim told the Providence Journal that Rainey's sentencing should send a message to others who were victims of childhood sexual assault to come forward, because they can still get justice.

Defense attorney Jeff Garabedian argued Tuesday for a sentence of between 20 and 30 years.

But Superior Court Judge William Carnes handed down the longer sentence, saying Rainey had showed no remorse.

Rainey also is charged in a separate case with providing an 11-year-old girl to a friend for sex, an arrest that led this victim to come forward.
