Pell forms committee to explore run for governor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Clay Pell has formed an exploratory committee ahead of a possible campaign for governor.

The grandson of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell filed committee paperwork with elections officials Monday. Pell says in a statement that too many Rhode Islanders have been "left behind" and that the next governor must work for a brighter, bolder future.

Pell is an attorney and Coast Guard reserve officer who has worked at the White House and the U.S. Department of Education.

He says he's meeting with people around the state before deciding whether to run.

If Pell runs, he will face Providence Mayor Angel Taveras in the Democratic Primary. Democratic Treasurer Gina Raimondo is also expected to run.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Moderate Party founder Ken Block are running as Republicans.
