Portsmouth Official States that Sakonnet Bridge Tolls are Illegal

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) _ Portsmouth's town solicitor has informed state officials that putting tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge would be illegal.

The Newport Daily News reports that Town Solicitor Kevin Gavin wrote a letter last week to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, describing the town's position on the planned tolls to the agency's executive director.

The tolls would begin this summer unless state lawmakers reverse a decision they made last year to approve the tolls, which would go toward maintenance costs. The toll amounts haven't been set.

Gavin says a 2003 state environmental impact statement eliminated the use of tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge from consideration at the direction of then-Gov. Donald Carcieri. He says a new environmental impact statement would be needed before tolls could be approved.
