Providence Asks to Delay Taveras' Deposition

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — An attorney for a company being sued by the city says Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is the central witness in the lawsuit and wants to depose him sometime this month.

The city sued its longtime actuary Buck Consultants in February 2013 over what it called "fundamental and inexcusable errors" in calculating the projected savings from its pension overhaul — a mistake it says cost more than $10 million.

Taveras is running for governor against Treasurer Gina Raimondo and former Obama administration official Clay Pell.

The city asked a federal judge last week to delay Taveras' Aug. 19 deposition and limit it to three hours because of the Sept. 9 Democratic primary and pressing city business.

The attorney for Buck Consultants objected in paperwork filed in U.S. District Court Monday.
