PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Providence is getting 54 new firefighters.
The new recruits are set to be officially sworn-in as members of the Providence Fire Department on Friday. Each of the new firefighters completed a 22-week training process.
For the first time in the department's history a female recruit is the top graduate of the class.
Mayor Angel Taveras, Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare, Fire Chief Clarence Cunha and others plan to attend a graduation ceremony for the new firefighters on Friday evening.
The city says the event may be postponed until Saturday because of the winter storm.
