PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Rhode Island, with several inches of rain in the forecast.

The watch goes into effect at 8 p.m. Monday and stretches into Wednesday afternoon.

Forecasters say a few waves of showers and thunderstorms will move across southern New England beginning Monday night. Additional rain is expected Tuesday and Wednesday. The risk of flooding is greatest late Tuesday into Wednesday. The watch also includes other parts of the region.

Rain amounts could total 2 to 4 inches, with more in some places.

Flash flooding is the main concern, but smaller streams could also flood.
