RI commission reviews of toll alternatives

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A state commission is continuing to look for ways to eliminate the Sakonnet River Bridge toll — but alternatives are so far proving to be elusive.

The commission met Wednesday and heard from lawmakers and residents from the East Bay who say the toll is an economic burden on commuters, residents and tourists.

The General Assembly created the commission after residents in the East Bay protested plans for a toll on the new span, which connects Tiverton and Portsmouth.

Lawmakers capped the toll at 10 cents until next spring to provide time to research alternatives. The toll is likely to increase next year if no other way of paying for bridge maintenance is found.

Some residents suggest that the state cut spending in other areas to raise the money.
