PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Islanders' personal income increased 2.6 percent from 2012 to 2013, ranking the state 23rd in the country.

A report by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis says state residents' income was $49.4 billion last year, up from $48.2 billion in 2012.

The Providence Journal reports that although Rhode Islanders' income ranked in the middle of the pack among the states, it was second in New England behind Vermont, which saw a 2.9 percent increase.

The largest increase nationwide was in North Dakota at 7.6 percent and the smallest was in West Virginia at 1.5 percent.

Rhode Island's income growth was spurred by a 4 percent increase in dividend, interest and rent income.

Per-capita income in Rhode Island was about $47,000, ranking 14th nationally and fourth in New England.
