PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A Superior Court judge has refused to recuse himself from a defense lawyer's trial later this month.
Lawyers for Donna Uhlmann, a lawyer who faces bribery and obstruction of justice charges, argued that statements in court by Judge Robert D. Krause created a perception that he has prejudged her case, damaging her chances for a fair trial.
The Providence Journal reports that Krause rejected the motion. He says the burden was on the defense to show he had a bias ''so extreme as to display clear inability to render fair judgment.''
Krause presided over the trial of Gerard Donley, a defense lawyer who was found guilty of bribing a witness in a stabbing case.
The state claims Uhlmann was part of the conspiracy.
She has pleaded not guilty.
