PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A new report says Rhode Island has some of the worst achievement gaps between Latino and white students in the country and that the state's English language learning program is in crisis.
The report is being released Tuesday by the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University. It found that Latino students scored two to three levels behind their white peers on national math assessments and one to two levels behind in reading.
The report says Rhode Island's English language learners are among the lowest performing nationally.
Institute Director Anna Cano Morales calls the findings daunting. She says better serving Latino students is critical for the future workforce and economy.
Education Commissioner Deborah Gist says the state has made progress closing the achievement gap but more needs to be done.
