PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is marking World AIDS Day.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee, his wife Stephanie Chafee and others will speak at a Statehouse event Monday. Chafee is a registered nurse who has worked with AIDS patients.

Organizers of the event say nearly 1,600 Rhode Islanders have died from AIDS since 1983 and more than 2,000 are now living with the disease.

The event is sponsored by the Rhode Island Coalition for HIV Prevention.

Also on Monday, the state's health department will unveil a new campaign to encourage people to get tested for the disease and take steps to prevent infection.

Later in the day, the City of Providence will sponsor a Worlds AIDS Day event at the Biltmore called Providence RED.
