PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police have charged a Providence man in the sexual assault of an elementary school student who was mistakenly allowed to leave school with the suspect.
The Providence Journal reports that the man is accused of inappropriately touching the girl after taking her from Asa Messer Elementary. He was known to staff and had been seen with the girl and her family before, but he wasn't on the list of people authorized to take the child out of school.
The Associated Press is not naming the man because he is related to the girl and doing so could identify her.
Providence Superintendent Susan Lusi calls the incident a "nightmare scenario" and says schools will review student dismissal policies.
The employee who allowed the man to take the girl has been disciplined.
